Friends, one of the very great aspects about planning wedding events is that you get to see a lot of amazing creative ideas come to life. The most exciting and perhaps the craziest part of the whole thing though is how a team of individuals ( friends but majority strangers) will do anything in their power to make a bride’s grand ideas become reality. Basically, if you can dream, come up with awesome creative ideas, and can gather a wonderful team of people with all kinds of unique talents, then yes you can make the magic happen. Speaking of which, you will find all these ingredients and more in Reema and Asir’s beautiful Mid-December Night Mehndi (Henna) event that took place in Houston, Texas.

If you are a fan of literature or specifically A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a play by William Shakespeare, then you will really enjoy the decor and visuals of this event. Following Reema, the very pretty and Masha’Allah creative bride once again shares some words and visuals on the inspiration behind some of the details at her event.

The theme was Asir & Reemas Mid-December Night Mendhi. The theme incorporated very fantastical elements including white glittery butterflies, and butterfly cookies. I am a huge fan of Mid Summer Nights dream and wanted it to feel very outdoorsy even indoors. That is why the rod iron chandelier was covered in marigold garlands, there was a lot of candle light and dim hall lighting. We had pink and green spot lighting and large intricate gobos.

The doli was made by my DJ, Arshad Virani. I had seen the photo online of a doli very similar and started looking for a copy in Houston. Much to my dismay no one seemed to have it. Arshad knew of a good carpenter and offered his services as part of my package. I helped him secure the umbrella (which was surprisingly difficult to find in the right size and color) and matched cloth for the back, and ribbons for trim. I then took it to my tailor who took on the task of recreating the umbrella. We picked the paint, and accents in gold together and it was truly straight out my vision of how I wanted to enter.

My good friend Erum Khan made the reservation signs as well as my wedding stationary. She coordinated the invites, the reservation sides, the table numbers and my favors all together.

The flower design on top of my stage was an idea that my fiance and the DJ (who also did our lighting) came up with together. They believed it would add drama and they succeeded!

Every season we request a beauty expert to share with us some of their favorite products they would recommend for a specific season and maybe even year round. For winter we checked in with the very popular, one of the most beloved and sought after makeup artist in Detroit, Michigan, Amanie Mokdad to share with us some of her makeup must-haves for this season. Our personal tip after having makeup done by Amanie and seeing the amazing flawless results that last for hours is to definitely check out her suggestions. She is a makeup genius in our opinion.

Winter Makeup Must Haves By Amanie Mokdad

Some products I absolutely love and swear for brides and every woman the entire year.

1. Primer – whether you have great skin or need some help, nothing helps prepare the face for a beautiful application like primer. Laura Mercier, Makeup Forever, MAC all have great ones whatever the skin type.

3. CoverGirl mascara- Ditch the expensive brands, ingredients are virtually the same but the price tag is very different. Every six to eight weeks, replace your existing mascara to cut down on bacteria. Play it safe around the eyes.

5. Proactiv’s Refining Mask is essential for very oily skin. Ten minutes before you do makeup, makes a big difference in how well makeup wears.

6. Be adventurous with raising the glamour quotient especially for your wedding. Makeup doesn’t have to be stressful so long as you are knowledgeable about what looks good on you and what doesn’t. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Have you ever noticed how challenging it is for hijabi brides when they have to incorporate both a hijab (head scarf) and a traditional long veil (depending on the ethnicity) into their bridal outfit? From being around and having the pleasure of helping or just staring at these brides in a worry, we have observed two things. One, either the bride will take off the head scarf and just focus on the long veil or two, wear the head scarf along with the long veil (happens with South Asian hijabi brides a lot when they have to wear a dupatta) but not necessarily have a good polished look. By that we mean either scarf and the outfit are mismatched or head scarf and veil are there but then part of your neck line area is exposed for jewelry wearing purposes. With all that in mind, we were super excited when we stumbled on the unique and creative hijab styling works by Shehreen Hijabs based in United Kingdom.

What we really like about her work is how she has managed to make all the bridal pieces work in unison. As you will see in the following beautiful styling examples (see below), the bridal hijab (head scarf), the long veil and the jewelry are all set and styled in such a way that nothing looks out of place nor any skin is exposed for bridal jewelry purposes. Instead of looking like an obvious display, the jewelry and accessories seem embedded and part of the beautiful bridal gown. These careful consideration of details is reflective of Shehreen’s key rules in which she takes pride. Her key rules are, “no camel humps, bare necks or chests.” She adds, “none of my designs enforce this, nor do I  ever artificially enhance hijabs with layers of volume or khaleeji flower clips.” Following, check out some of Shehreen’s stunning work.

Shehreen was always very creative with her own hijab and girls used to approach her about it. She eventually ended up styling for some friends’ weddings and this inspired her to start hijab styling professionally. Makeup Artist Saleha Abbasi

A few months ago, we came across this wonderful exhibition (virtually) that took place at the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha, Qatar. We had so many great pondering moments that we thought why not let you all join in the fun as well?

So the topic of the exhibition was ‘The Arts of Giving: Visual stories of Islamic generosity from the seventh century to today.’ One particular section that caught our eye was ‘Gifts Of The Sultan: The Arts of Giving At The Islamic Courts.’ As expected the types of gifts mentioned included gold coins, jewelry, cameos, lamps, bowls, animals, their accessories (ex. horses and saddles). These of course sound more artsy and cool than present day common folks simple but practical gifts of shirts, ties, shoes, crystal vases, scented candles, frames, more crystal vases and baklava! Okay so last few items were not practical at all. Plus, we are quite sure they are not on a royalty’s must-have list.

If we were a fellow sultan though, we would of course expect nothing less then the aforementioned gifts in the beginning. Although, if we ever gave someone a comb today, they would most likely wonder if we are indirectly implying if they have horrible hair manners or perhaps indicating that it is time to tame that mane. On top of that, your mother and grandmother would most probably lecture you on your bad gift giving manners. Let’s not forget the slight difference between a comb made of gold settings with emeralds and rubies and a common comb that really offers, well nothing but love and the great satisfaction of not using your fingers to comb your hair (no offense to those who enjoy it).

Another thing that really fascinated us from this exhibition was this simple and cute illustration that left us wondering in silence. Literally. No, you are not having hearing problems. There is actually no sound coming out of that video. But dear friends, what did come out of this video was the thought that wow, gift giving especially the idea of a groom giving a gift to a bride particularly bangles has been going on in different cultures for such a long time. Masha’Allah, isn’t that just wonderful?

Granted the ones you might get today may not be like the gigantic gold ones from Fatimid Dynasty but rest assured lovely brides, they will be some pretty and petite version of it Insha’Allah. If you are blessed like some of the brides that we have come across Masha’Allah, you may even get a gift of bracelets (a.k.a Kangans in South Asia) from both sides! As in from your mother and your mother-in-law.

One of the coolest part of pondering upon the whole experience was actually receiving a mysterious e-gift from the Gifts of the Sultan exhibition! Oooh what could it be!?

 And you guessed it right! It’s a…it’s a…

but of course, it is a turban ornament! Yay! Okay so it’s more of a gift for your future groom-to-be than you but hey it’s all good. If your groom refuses to wear such a fine gorgeous jewel on his turban than it is his loss and you can be the first bride to introduce it as a beautiful hijab pin, brooch to your veil, or a cool pendant. Regardless can we just say we loved this virtual exhibition and would have loved it even more in person. Hopefully one day, one of these cool exhibitions will visit the great land of Michigan and the surrounding areas as well Insha’Allah.

We are so excited to share with you the beautiful wedding events of Reema and Asir that took place in Houston, Texas. In this first post, the bride Reema shares with us some words and detail shots of her henna and decor from her Mayoun event. A traditional South Asian cultural wedding event that takes place before the Nikah and main wedding reception. The event traditionally marks the official beginning of the wedding events and takes place at the home of the bride and maybe the groom separately. The event is usually ladies only and is attended by close family and friends. The program starts with an Islamic discourse and dua for the new couple-to-be plus includes customary traditions like gift giving by close family members, singing, playing the dhol and eating delicious dinner and desserts. Some brides also choose to get their bridal henna done earlier that day while mom, sisters, cousins and friend get their henna during the Mayoun event. My mehndi or henna application took about three hours. Saniya Momin of Infinite Perfection did my mehndi design. My wedding outfit and my mehndi event outfit had paisleys so I knew I wanted traditional South Asian bridal mehndi with paisleys to go along with the theme.

The floral jewelry was done by Yasmine Pervais of Sugar Land Party Rentals. She provides a variety of floral jewelry and I was absolutely in love with the delicateness of the designs. I had a tikka, earings, bracelets,  a ring and my mother-in-law had even brought payal (feet bracelet) florals.

All the Mayoun decor was done by me and various friends and family members. The lanterns were store bought but all hung by me and my cousin. The lights as well were hung by us. I wanted to have a playful fun feel at the mayoun and keep it very homey and itnimate. The narrow patio with hung lanters, and the fireplace gave it the right feel of a small gathering of close loved ones.

Fall is literally around the corner and with that we wrap up our summer makeup must-have series. Our final recommendation list of favorite makeup products that a professional would  use on their brides or non-brides and consider them as great investments comes from Mehwish Khan, a professional makeup artist and hair stylist based in Chicago.

Right off the bat, I can think of a couple of items I would recommend for Summer:

1. Smashbox B.B. Cream: Breathable, lightweight and protecting, this product is a cross between a moisturizer, sunscreen, shine-reducing primer and tinted moisturizer (with buildable coverage.) I find it doesn’t “moisturize” adequately for dry skin types, but for those who need less moisture during the summer months, this product is perfect. Garnier B.B. Cream: Does all the great things its department store counterpart does, for almost half the price. The difference? I find it more moisturizing and it leaves a bit of a dewier look.

BB Cream Recommendations:

2. Garnier Anti-Dark-Circle Eye Roller: Super brightening without build-up or weight. Blends beautifully and brightens other areas of the face. It goes on to cool and refresh while giving your eyes a naturally rested look. I use it on other areas of the face that I’d like to highlight. The best part — it’s not cakey or heavy and doesn’t crease! Perfect for summer, although I use it year-round.

Dark Circle recommendation:
•Garnier Anti-Dark-Circle Eye Roller – Find it at Walgreens, CVS or other drugstores

3. Tarte Liquid Pen Liner: Waterproof, so it’s pool-proof and it comes in a brush-tip pen design, so it’s fool-proof! I love how simple and easy this liner makes it to get that sexy winged liner look. Once it’s on, it stays on!

1. For a natural dewy healthy glowing skin, I would recommend face and body foundation with ‘Soft and Gentle’ for glow from MAC.

Selected to work backstage at numerous fashion shows that includes LA fashion week, In style Events, such as BET AWARDS and MTV MUSIC AWARDS, working with Lauren Conrad, Jamie Fox, Brittney Spears, Pitt Bull, Beyonce and Amir Adnan.

Along with behind the scenes work, Nida has taught Master classes for Mac Cosmetic as well as her own private classes. In 2001 Nida attended Mario Tricoci Beauty school for hair and makeup. Since that time she has been working for Mac Pro, Freelancing and has become a Fashion show and Advanced makeup certified in the arena of makeup.

For last 6 years, Nida has worked at Mac Pro Store in Orange county. She also specializes in Air-brushing and Muslim brides.

        Hijab Stylist, Shamma of         Shumsie’s Bridal Hijabs

The talented hijab stylist, Shamma is from Male’, the capital of Maldives. She has always had an interest in hijab styling and has been styling hijabs as a profession for about ten months now. All her work has been self-taught and each hijab has been styled to perfection after hours of practice. For Shamma, modesty is important and she makes it a point to cover up the ears and neck in all her hijab styles. Her designs are usually a mix of Turkish, Egyptian and Indonesian Looks. She has a special interest in the intricate Turkish styles and her looks are also inspired by vintage and whimsical designs and pastel colors.

Now at this point, you are most probably wondering if this talented hijab stylist caters to the international audience? Well unfortunately, this service is mainly an on the spot hijab styling service and none of the hijabs have been made/sewn. The ruffles and folds that you see in the hijab styles have been created using pins and therefore sadly this service is only available to people in Male’ the capital of Maldives which is where Shamma is located.

Not all is lost though, you can sill learn and apply her style in the comfort of your own home.
