One of the challenges hijabi brides have to face when putting together their outfit is to make sure the hijab matches the rest of the bridal dress. Most of the time both items are purchased separately. Then one has to go through the difficult task of either finding a readymade hijab that will match the outfit or get a cloth dyed to get the exact matching color. Even then, many times you end up with a color that is slightly off.  

A very good option that could help future brides resolve this problem would be to go for a custom made designer bridal hijab. We actually did not know any such designers existed in United States until thanks to one of our readers who brought our attention to Vela Scarves.

We were so happy to hear that there is at least one Muslim American fashion designer who has taken the initiative to help brides out with this issue and offer beautiful and stylishly designed couture hijabs.

We got in touch with Marwa Atik, the designer of Vela Scarves and she was kind enough to share her work and answer some questions for The Muslim Bride readers that might be interested in getting a custom made bridal hijab. 

Tell us how and when did you decide to start Vela? What inspired you to do it? 

Vela was established in 2010, but I thought of the idea in August of 2009. I began thinking of unique ways of designing a scarf and setting a different approach to the plain canvas scarves most Muslim women wear. I didn’t think my sketches could become real until one day I implemented them, and wore it out to a quiyam and it left others and me in the community speechless. It was at that moment where I felt like there was a huge gap in Muslim fashion and I wanted to fill that void. So I teamed up with my sister Tasneem Atik Sabri and began designing scarves for women like me.

Did you get professional training as a designer? 

No I didn’t get any professional training as a designer. For me it kind of started backwards, I had the idea first and then I began taking design and business classes. As of now though I’ve had 3 years of sewing under my belt, I still have so much to absorb.

Since a lot of Muslim brides will be seeing this InshaAllah, is there something you would like to say to them?

One special thing I wanted to do with Vela is offer a bridal collection. Each scarf is “One of One” Which means that we custom make and fit each scarf to the bride’s request, making each scarf in itself, an original. My team and I develop a relationship with the bride to make sure they are satisfied. Our whole motive is to satisfy the brides’ needs. My team and myself know and understand that sometimes it’s hard to find a scarf to match the dress, so we make sure the scarf fits the dress.

 What is the price range for getting a bridal hijab designed?

Our price begins from $50 and could range from there depending on the brides request.

Do you normally work on one hijab at a time or take bulk orders? What if the bride wants to do get some made for her bridesmaids or family members etc? 

That’s a really good question! Yes I have worked on more than one custom hijab at a time. However, I have never had a bridesmaid request but I hope to have some in the future, that sounds like a lot of fun!
